What Each Role Does (Practical, Day-to-Day)

1) Conservation Assistant (BPS-11)

  • Assist senior conservators in cleaning, stabilizing, and restoring artifacts (stone, metal, terracotta, stucco, wood, manuscripts).
  • Prepare condition reports, photographs, and conservation logbooks.
  • Mix and apply consolidants, adhesives, fillers, and reversible coatings as per conservation ethics.
  • Monitor temperature, humidity, pests, and storage conditions.
  • Support site conservation tasks (grouting, re-pointing, protective shelters) under supervision.
  • Follow lab safety procedures and coordinate with museum registrars.

Good to have: familiarity with basic chemistry, safe handling of solvents, and a passion for heritage objects.

2) Building Superintendent (BPS-11)

  • Oversee maintenance of museum/office buildings, galleries, stores, and grounds.
  • Manage civil works (repairs, minor renovations, preventive maintenance schedules).
  • Liaise with contractors; inspect workmanship, measure quantities, and verify bills.
  • Keep stock registers, maintenance logs, and ensure HSE compliance for staff/visitors.
  • Coordinate with Electrical/Mechanical support for seamless facility operations.

Good to have: experience with public works codes, BOQs, and basic AutoCAD reading.

3) Modeller (BPS-10)

  • Create scale models, replicas, dioramas, and interpretive elements for galleries and traveling exhibitions.
  • Work in clay, plaster, resin, wood, and mixed media; paint and finish surfaces to curatorial standards.
  • Collaborate with archaeologists to reconstruct site features accurately.
  • Maintain workshop tools and adhere to exhibit safety (no off-gassing materials near objects).

Portfolio tip: include photos of models/miniatures, museum props, or educational displays you’ve made.

4) Display Assistant (BPS-10)

  • Assist in gallery mounting, label placement, case preparation, and lighting adjustments.
  • Help produce graphics, signage, and simple mounts under a designer/curator’s guidance.
  • Maintain cleanliness and condition of display cases; monitor for condensation and pests.
  • Support visitor flow improvements and exhibition change-overs.

Stand-out skill: basic Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop/CorelDRAW for formatting labels/panels.

5) Electrician (BPS-09)

  • Maintain and troubleshoot wiring, distribution boards, lighting tracks, gallery spotlights, and emergency systems.
  • Support conservation lab power needs (stabilizers, UPS), ensure earthing and surge protection.
  • Execute preventive inspections, keep logbooks, and ensure compliance with electrical safety codes.
  • Assist display teams in achieving accurate color-temperature lighting for artifacts.

Must have: valid electrician’s license + 3 years’ practical experience; safe work practices are non-negotiable.

6) Artist-Cum-Draftsman (BPS-09)

  • Prepare architectural drawings, exhibit layouts, and technical sketches by hand and digitally.
  • Translate site measurements into scaled plans/elevations/sections.
  • Produce mounting diagrams, case designs, and signage placement plans.
  • Maintain an organized drawing register and digital archive.

Helpful skills: AutoCAD, basic SketchUp, and strong line-drawing/lettering.
